Chance for snow this week in Kansas City, and not a lot of sunshine in forecast

Temperatures are expected to drop Sunday afternoon as morning pop-up showers come to an end in the Kansas City area, said FOX4 meteorologist Alex Countee.

Kansas City has cold temperatures in the forecast, with the next chance for snow coming Wednesday.

“As we move throughout this afternoon, temperatures will be falling,” said Countee, who provides weather updates to The Star. “We will be done with the rain by then. Clouds will be hanging around, but temperatures will quickly move through the 40s to right at 40 degrees by 6 o’clock.”

It will be breezy for the second half of Sunday, with winds coming out of the north and west at 15 to 20 mph.

“As we head toward Monday and Tuesday, we’ll be staying dry, but still not seeing a whole lot of sunshine as those temperatures stay in the low 40s,” Countee said.

Countee said he’s watching Wednesday’s weather closely.

“That’s going to be our next best chance of a little bit of snow in the morning, maybe some rain in the afternoon hours,” Countee said. “Right now, with that high temperature of 37 degrees, we shouldn’t see too many problems. But early on Wednesday, watch out for a few slick spots on the roads.”

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

The rest of the work week looks dry, although it will be a bit cooler, with highs in the upper 20s on Thursday and mid-30s on Valentine’s Day.

“On Friday though, we’re looking pretty good with lots of sunshine,” Countee said.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said Sunday got off to a start on the warm side with temperatures at 42 degrees at 5 a.m. — the normal high for this time of year is 41 degrees. Sunday’s high was expected to be near 50 degrees.

The weather service also pointed out that Kansas City this winter has avoided the cold weather it typically sees.

As of Saturday, Kansas City has only had three days with lows below 10 degrees. Typically, Kansas City has 12 days by that time. Also, Kansas City has had only 9 days with highs below freezing. Normally, it has 19 days.
