Winter storm continues in Kansas City with cold rain transitioning into wet snow

It will be a chilly, wet day in Kansas City before the precipitation turns over to all snow Thursday evening as round two of a three-day winter storm system moves through the metro, said FOX4 meteorologist Michelle Bogowith.

“For the morning hours today, we are seeing cold rain showers, a little bit of drizzle and there may be a little bit of snowflakes mixing in with some of that activity,” said Bogowith, who provides weather updates to The Star. “Throughout the majority of the day today, it’s just going to be off-and-on cold rain showers.”

Late Thursday evening, a few snowflakes will start mixing in as the storm begins its transition over to wet snow event, she said.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill urged drivers to take it easy on the roads during their commutes, saying more slushy snow will be possible.

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

A closer look

Rain will be likely throughout the morning Thursday, with the cold rain showers showing up by the lunch hour. The wintry weather will stay off to the north of the metro, Bogowith said.

“But that will start to scoot down closer to the metro area as we get into the evening commute hours,” Bogowith said. “By 6 or 7 p.m., it will start pushing into the north side of the metro area. By midnight tonight, we will have transitioned completely over to snow.”

The snow will likely stick to the roads Friday morning. The snow will continue into the afternoon, mostly on the Missouri side of the metro. Before moving out of the area, the storm is expected to dump up to 2 inches of snow in the metro. Areas to the east could see 2 to 4 inches.

It will remain cloudy and cold headed into the weekend, with highs in the mid-30s on Saturday. Temperatures will return to normal on Sunday, with the high of 39 degrees. Temperatures will climb into the mid- to upper 40s early next week.

But Kansas City next’s winter storm system arrives Tuesday evening into Wednesday.
