Kansas City’s weather to seesaw between snow, freezing rain, sleet and cold rain
It’s almost like the weather just can’t make up its mind when it comes to precipitation in the Kansas City metro area Wednesday.
But all of the stuff the weather is throwing at us will be cold.
“For the remainder of the day today we will switch back and forth between some snow, some freezing rain and sleet and then some very cold rain,” said FOX4 meteorologist Michelle Bogowith, who provides weather updates to The Star. “I do anticipate road conditions improving and we will see some of this activity carrying over into your Thursday.”
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said on Twitter that the metro area warmed a degree or two and as of a result was seeing more of a rain to rain/snow mix versus all snow.
In addition, roads had improved significantly across the metro. However, rural highways and county roads remained slick.
With temperatures hovering near freezing, the weather service was not expecting a hard, widespread freeze overnight. There still could be some slick patches.
Cold rain showers will be possible early Thursday. A little wintry mix is expected throughout the day Thursday before changing over to all snow, she said.
“That snow will be with us overnight Thursday into Friday,” Bogowith said. “We are anticipating some snow accumulations with that round as things wind down with this (storm) system.”
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
Temperatures are expected to reach into the mid-30s degrees on Wednesday and Thursday and hover around freezing on Friday. Heading into the weekend, it will be a very cold start with a high of 30 degrees likely, she said.
It will be slightly warmer Sunday, when highs are expected to climb back to 36 degrees, which will be just a degree or two below what is normal for his time of year in Kansas City.
“Tuesday and Wednesday, we track our next weather system that will start to increase our chances for precipitation,” Bogowith said.
