Icy conditions will likely cause problems for drivers Friday morning in KC, forecast says
Colder air has moved into the Kansas City area and we’re expecting to see a wintry mix of precipitation later this week that could impact road conditions, according to FOX4 meteorologist Joe Lauria.
In a weather update to The Star, Lauria said temperatures are going to be in the 20s to around 30 on Thursday, and the colder weather will stick around through Thursday night.
“Meanwhile, the colder temperatures continue through tomorrow night, and that’s the problem because as moisture comes up from the south and west, it comes into that cold air and we start to see some light sleet, maybe some light snow developing during the wee hours of Friday morning just before rush hour,” Lauria said. “That light sleet will start to increase in intensity, and we could have some moderate sleet for a while Friday during the first part of the day.”
Icy conditions will likely cause problems on the roads Friday morning, the meteorologist said. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are possible in the Kansas City area.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued a winter storm watch for parts of Missouri and Kansas, including the entire Kansas City area. The watch will be in effect from late Thursday to Friday afternoon.
The sleet and freezing rain will then change over to rain as temperatures rise above freezing during the afternoon hours.
