Colder temperatures move in as next winter storm with wintry mix approaches KC
It will start getting colder in the Kansas City area Wednesday as the next winter storm approaches, threatening to bring snow, freezing rain or sleet, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.
“Later on today it’s going to be, well, a lot colder than this morning,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star. “We are starting out in the 40s this morning. We will be in the mid-30s for the drive home. We should have a little bit of sunshine returning later in the day after the fog moves out.”
It will also be windy as winds increase out of the north, reaching 15 to 20 mph Wednesday afternoon.
“We are watching tomorrow night into Friday’s forecast very closely because we will have the cold air in place tomorrow and tomorrow night; it is very likely we will have a snow or wintry mix to deal with,” Ritter said.
That will continue overnight into Friday morning, she said.
“When we wake up Friday morning, snow, sleet or freezing rain is possible and this is going to continue through the middle of the morning,” Ritter said.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill said the morning commute in Kansas City could be impacted by the wintry conditions.
“Mid-morning into the afternoon is when we will start transition into just a cold rain on top of all that winter weather. The drive home on Friday is going to soggy, but not frozen.”
BEHIND THE STORY
MOREHow we did this story
The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.
Temperatures on Friday will be in the 30s for most of the day, but overnight they will soar briefly into the 40s. Then the cold air moves back in to the area with highs reaching the low 30s on Saturday.
The high on Sunday is expected to be in the upper 20s, which will make for a cold, but dry, conditions for the AFC Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium Sunday afternoon.
