Looming winter storm may bring snow and rain to Kansas City this week

A dense fog that has once again descended upon the Kansas City area will lift Tuesday morning, giving way to what will eventually be a pleasant winter day in the metro, said FOX4 meteorologist Karli Ritter.

“Later on today after the fog lifts, we are going to see our numbers respond nicely — back up into the 50s — and its going to be another warmer-than-average afternoon with very pleasant conditions,” said Ritter, who provides weather updates to The Star.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill advised commuters to leave a little bit earlier to allow extra time because of the fog.

There will be some spits and sprinkles around the area Tuesday night through early Wednesday, Ritter said. Areas north of Kansas City have a better chance for a mixed precipitation of freezing rain and sleet across northern Missouri late Tuesday to early Wednesday.

“When we wake up tomorrow morning, we will still have the clouds, but tomorrow afternoon we clear out,” Ritter said.

How we did this story

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

Highs on Wednesday still expected to be unseasonably warm with temperatures reaching into the mid-40s. The average high for this time of year in the Kansas City area is 38 degrees, according to the weather service.

“Heading into the end of the week, that is where we have our next weather system that is likely going to start off as something frozen or even some snow, but finish as rain as warmer air surges in,” Ritter said. “That will leave us behind it with some cooler conditions, but dry conditions for the weekend.”

The high on Thursday is expected to be around freezing. Friday will be warming with temperatures reaching into the mid-40s. Saturday and Sunday will hover around 32 degrees, which will make for a cold and sunny day for the AFC Championship game between the Tennessee Titans and the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
