Rain and snow possible during Chiefs game, and another storm system heads for KC

A mix of rain and snow could move through Kansas City Sunday afternoon, possibly affecting the second half of the NFL playoff game between the Chiefs and Texans, according to FOX4 meteorologist Alex Countee.

“It shouldn’t be too terrible out there,” said Countee, who provides weather updates to The Star.

“Accumulations are going to stay basically at zero for the metro itself. Up toward the north, where we could have a little bit more snow, around the Missouri-Iowa border and over toward Nebraska too, that’s where we could see a dusting to maybe 2 inches of additional snowfall,” he said. “That’s going to be about it for today.”

The Star produced this weather update in partnership with the local FOX4 television station. The station’s meteorologists create forecast videos multiple times a day for the newspaper to include in its weather reports.

Afternoon highs are expected to reach into the mid- to upper 30s Sunday afternoon during the game. But wind chill values will stay in the 20s.

“Monday all the way to Wednesday, we are staying mainly dry — except for areas out toward the east the middle of the work week as we could see our next quick-hitting system work its way through,” Countee said.

Highs this week are expected to warm back up into the 40s.

“We will kind of bounce back and forth between the 30s, 40s and even down into the 20s as we head toward early next weekend all thanks to the next system,” Countee said.

“That’s going to be bringing more widespread precip, maybe even a wintry mix Friday, changing over to rain showers afternoon.”

RideKC Freedom paratransit was running under it’s inclement weather plan’s Phase B for the remainder of Sunday, with some riders experiencing delays of 60 minutes or more, the RideKC transit agency said Sunday afternoon. Riders with non-critical trips were being urged to consider canceling and rescheduling them.

RideKC Freedom will being its Monday’s service under Phase B, the agency said.

Meanwhile, most RideKC buses were using regular routes, although a few buses were delayed about 10 minutes because of road conditions. Riders were urged to use caution getting on and off buses as well as walking to and from bus stops.
