Bitter cold hits Kansas City ahead of Chiefs-Texans playoff game at Arrowhead

Fans headed out early for the NFL playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium better make warm clothing part of their game plan.

Wind chills are bitterly cold, hovering around 10 degrees, according the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill.

At 8 a.m., the temperature at Kansas City International Airport was 22 degrees. When you factored in a wind of about 10 mph, wind chill temperatures were holding at 11 degrees.

Although temperatures are expected to warm into the upper 30s Sunday afternoon, southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph will likely make it feel much colder. It will feel more like the upper 20s.

The temperature at the 2:05 p.m. kickoff of the game is expected to be 32 degrees, with a wind chill of 24 degrees.

A light rain and snow is possible late Sunday afternoon, but only minor accumulations are expected. South of the metro area where temperatures climb above freezing, there could be some sprinkles or periods of light right, according to the weather service.

Road crews worked through the nights across the metro clearing main thoroughfares and highways. Highways for the most part were clear, but remained wet with some slick spots. Drivers should use caution on entrance and exit ramps on the highways.

Kansas City said it’s road crews worked overnight on major roads and paid extra attention to roads around the stadium iin anticipation of game traffic Sunday. Residential crews were to return to their routes at 7 a.m., plowing driveable lanes in neighborhoods and salting only hills, curves and intersections.
