From there, you’ll be able to visit the profiles of each lawmaker and find their office address, phone number, email and any other information about their legislative record. You will also find similar information for statewide elected officials, such as the governor and secretary of state.

The ACLU offers some best practices for what to say when you contact your representatives, such as:

  • Keep it short and sweet, limit your letter to one issue.

  • Say who you are from the start, and make sure you mention that you’re a constituent.

  • If you’re reaching out about a specific piece of legislation, make sure to include details like the bill number.

  • Make it personal, offer a story about yourself or your community.
