Residents have complained for years that the railroad crossing in Mendon, Missouri, was dangerous.

Four people died at the crossing Monday when an Amtrak train with more than 250 passengers slammed into a dump truck and derailed.

Local residents pointed to several safety hazards:

  • No warning lights
  • No railroad gate
  • Excessively steep grade to the top of the crossing, making it difficult for trucks and heavy equipment
  • Overgrown brush along the tracks obscuring drivers’ views of oncoming trains
