Amtrak train derailed in Missouri

An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago with more than 200 passengers onboard derailed Monday afternoon after it struck a dump truck at a crossing in northern Missouri.

At least eight cars of an Amtrak train derailed on Monday after it struck a dump truck in northern Missouri. Multiple deaths and some injuries were reported, and The Star will continue to provide updates as they come.

The Southwest Chief train was traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago. After the crash, several trains were delayed or canceled Monday afternoon.

The Amtrak Southwest Chief train departing from Chicago was canceled. It was scheduled to leave at 2:50 p.m. to travel back on the same route as the crash, passing through Kansas City on its way to Los Angeles. As of Monday afternoon, the train was still scheduled to depart from Chicago on Tuesday.

A Southwest Chief train heading from Los Angeles was still scheduled to come through Kansas City Tuesday morning and arrive in Chicago Tuesday afternoon.

The Missouri River Runner train that travels between Kansas City and St. Louis is delayed but still scheduled to arrive to Union Station at 9:25 p.m. Monday, and it is still scheduled to depart from Union Station on Tuesday at 8:40 a.m.

Around 243 passengers and 12 crew members were onboard when the train crashed around 1:40 p.m. near Mendon, Missouri, according to a statement from Amtrak.
