Voters in Johnson County and across the metro weighed in on races Tuesday for school board seats and other municipal positions like mayor and city council.

A school board, also known as a board of education, is a nonpartisan body of individuals who are elected to represent their community’s values and views for public schools in their school district, according to the National School Boards Association.

The boards for the district develop and approve policies for the schools; hire, supervise and evaluate the superintendent; and approve budgets set by the superintendent. School boards are not in charge of any actual school management or day-to-day operations. The policies they are in charge of can range from fiscal management to rules around student discipline.

Below are the results as reported by the Johnson County Election Board for area school boards. The Star is only presenting results in competitive races. The results are displayed alphabetically by community.

Last week, Tiffany McCalla, a member of the Blue Valley Parent-Teacher Organization, announced a write-in campaign for a seat on the Blue Valley Board of Education representing District 5. Write-in candidate ballots are tallied separately than candidates on the official ballot and as a result are not represented in our live updating results.

But it appears that McCalla’s bid was unsuccessful, with all write-in candidates receiving 281 votes as opposed to incumbent Gina Knapp’s nearly 16,000 votes. Knapp is among three familiar faces returning to Blue Valley leadership.

At least one first-time candidate appears to have secured a spot on the Gardner-Edgerton school board amid culture war debates in the southern Johnson County district. Another seat appeared too close to call as of Tuesday night.

Two incumbents and two new faces earned spots on the Johnson County Community College board on Tuesday.
