27 counties and 2 cities supported Proposition A in Missouri. Was yours one of them?
While Republican candidates won big in Missouri on Election Day, voters also approved several progressive ballot measures. One of them was Proposition A, which easily won the state with 57.56% of the popular vote.
This measure will enable Missouri workers to accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked and will raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026. And in less than two months, the state’s minimum wage will rise to $13.75 on Jan. 1, 2025.
While it was largely championed by progressive workers’ groups in the state’s urban areas, Proposition A won a majority of the vote in many Missouri counties that also favored the Donald Trump/JD Vance presidential ticket.
In total, the measure prevailed in 27 counties as well as the city of St. Louis and the portion of Kansas City within Jackson County. Hover over the map to see what percentage of its voters supported Proposition A.
Proposition A received the most support in urban jurisdictions in and around Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbia. But unlike other progressive positions like support for Amendment 3 to restore abortion rights or the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz ticket, Proposition A saw significant support in rural areas of the state as well.
The far southeastern corner of the state supported raising its minimum wage: Mississippi, New Madrid, Dunklin and Pemiscot counties all gave more than 50% of their votes to Proposition A, with Pemiscot supporting it by more than 61%, according to preliminary results.
Proposition A prevailed in the counties that contain Joplin and Springfield, but also carried rural counties like Taney, Pulaski, Saline and Henry. Several small, rural counties in the north of the state, including Adair, Clark and Atchison, also favored the measure.
The counties most opposed to Proposition A were GOP strongholds like Osage, Barton, Bollinger and Wright counties. These counties also voted heavily against Amendment 3 and for the Trump/Vance presidential ticket. Bollinger County was the most opposed to Proposition A in the state, with only 31.9% of voters supporting it.
