Platte County election results: County Commission, children’s services tax

Missouri voters in and around Kansas City have cast ballots to weigh in on the races for governor, attorney general, state legislators, Platte County commission and more. Voters are also deciding on multiple ballot measures.

Below are live results for different races in Platte County:

Platte County Commission

Platte County, which includes Kansas City’s northwestern suburbs and the area around Kansas City International Airport, has a three-member commission, two of whom are up for election.

Republican Allyson Berberich defeated Charles McDonald in District 1, which represents the area roughly south of the airport. Joe Vanover will be the commissioner for District 2, which roughly covers the county north of I-435

Platte County Children Services Fund

Platte County approved the Children’s Services Fund to add a quarter-cent tax on sales made in Platte County for nonprofits and school programs that support children’s wellbeing from birth to 19 years old. It will work similarly to parallel taxes and funds in Clay and Jackson counties.

The tax is estimated to raise nearly $5 million a year, which would cost the average county resident about $20 a year, according to the coalition pushing for the tax.

Unopposed Platte County Races

Three offices in Platte County have candidates who are unopposed.

Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen is not seeking re-election. Erik Holland, a Republican, is the sole candidate running and earned 8,660 votes in the August primary. Sheriffs in Missouri serve four-year terms.

Marcus Farr, the current appraiser for the county assessor’s office, won the Republican primary for Platte County assessor. There are no Democrats running for the position.

Incumbent Rob Willard, a Republican, is running for reelection as the Platte County treasurer. There are no other candidates for this position.

Missouri Amendments

Missouri is voting on five amendments and one proposition, including contentious votes on abortion rights, sports gambling and minimum wage. If passed, the amendments would change the state constitution, whereas the Proposition A on minimum wage would change state law. All need a simple majority to pass.

U.S. House District 6

Missouri’s 6th Congressional District includes part of Kansas City’s Northland region.

Republican incumbent Sam Graves is running for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He handily defeated challengers Freddie Griffin Jr., Brandon Kleinmeyer and Weldon Wray Woodward in the 2024 Republican primary.

Pam May won the Democratic primary, and Andy Maidment is running as a Libertarian.

U.S. representatives serve two-year terms.

Governor

Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe defeated Missouri House Minority Leader Crystal Quade to win the governor’s race.

Missouri’s governor serves a four-year term, with a maximum of two terms.

Lieutenant Governor

Republican Dave Wasinger, Democrat Richard Brown and Libertarian Ken Iverson are running for lieutenant governor, a statewide elected office currently held by Republican Mike Kehoe.

Missouri’s lieutenant governor serves a four-year term.

Attorney General

Republican incumbent Andrew Bailey will run for re-election in November for Missouri attorney general, a statewide office. He faces Democrat Elad Gross and Libertarian Ryan Munro.

Missouri’s attorney general serves a four-year term, with a maximum of two terms.

Secretary of State

Republican Jay Ashcroft ran for governor, so he’s not seeking re-election for Missouri secretary of state, a statewide office that administers elections, among other responsibilities.

Missouri Sen. Denny Hoskins emerged as the victor in a crowded Republican field after the August primary. Barbara Phifer is the Democratic candidate, and Carl Herman Freese is the Libertarian nominee.

Missouri State House

State representatives are lawmakers responsible for drafting and voting on legislation. They also help create the state budget and create legislation that helps regulate state agencies. There are 163 state representatives in the Missouri House, each serving a two-year term at a time.

Platte County residents voted in the District 12, District 13, District 14 and District 38 primaries.

Among the notable results was in District 12, where Republican Mike Jones narrowly defeated Democratic incumbent Rep. Jamie Johnson.
