Platte County 2024 primary election results: Missouri legislature, KCPD funding
Platte County voters casting ballots in the primary elections on Aug. 6 will weigh in on several important statewide positions like the Missouri governor. Also on the ballot: races for U.S. House, the Missouri General Assembly, Platte County public administrator and more. Voters will also deccide if they want to use a sales tax to expand the county jail

Platte County Sales Tax Issue
Voters in Platte County voted down a half-cent, 20-year sales tax to expand the jail
The jail expansion project in Platte City was expected to cost $85 million, which the county wanted to issue in general obligation bonds and then pay back through the new proposed sales tax hike. Voters would have needed to approve each measure separately.
Platte County Commission
Platte County, which includes Kansas City’s northwestern suburbs and the area around Kansas City International Airport, has a three-member commission.
Both the 1st District, which represents the area roughly south of the airport, and the 2nd District, which roughly covers the county north of I-435, are up for election this year.
Charles McDonald will face Allyson Berberich in District 1 in November. Vanover won the Republican primary in his bid for a second term in Tuesday’s primary election.
Platte County Public Administrator
Incumbent Shanna Burns faced off against challenger Samantha Price for Platte County’s Public Administrator position. Both are Republicans; no Democrats are running this year.
Burns claimed victory by a margin of about 1,800 votes.
Platte County Assessor
Two Republicans and no Democrats are running in the primary for Platte County Assessor.
County Commissioner Dagmar Wood is facing off against challenger Marcus Farr, who is the appraiser for the county assessor’s office.
Unofficial results show a tight finish between the two, with Farr ahead by just 74 votes, or less than 1% of the ballots cast.
Platte County Sheriff
Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen is not seeking re-election, so it’s an open race for his countywide seat. Erik Holland, a Republican, is the sole candidate running in the 2024 primary and earned 8,660 votes in Tuesday’s vote.
Sheriffs in Missouri serve four-year terms.
Platte County Treasurer
Incumbent Rob Willard, a Republican, is running for reelection as the Platte County Treasurer. There are no other candidates for this position.
U.S. Senate
Josh Hawley, a Republican, is up for re-election to represent Missouri in the U.S. Senate. Lucas Kunce won the Democratic primary to take Hawley on, defeating December Harmon, Karla May and Mita Biswas.
U.S. senators serve six-year terms.
U.S. House District 6
Missouri’s 6th Congressional District includes part of Kansas City’s Northland region
Republican incumbent Sam Graves is running for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He handily defeated challengers Freddie Griffin Jr., Brandon Kleinmeyer and Weldon Wray Woodward in the 2024 Republican primary.
Pam May won the Democratic primary, and Andy Maidment is running as a Libertarian.
U.S. representatives serve two-year terms.
Governor
Mike Parson, a Republican, is not seeking re-election for Missouri governor because of term limits.Nine Republicans, five Democrats and one Libertarian ran in the open primary to replace him.
Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe came out on top of the crowded Republican race, and Missouri House Minority Leader Crystal Quade won the Democratic primary.
Missouri’s governor serves a four-year term, with a maximum of two terms.
Attorney General
Republican incumbent Andrew Bailey will run for re-election in November for Missouri attorney general, a statewide office. He fended off Will Scharf in a tense 2024 Republican primary Tuesday. He will now face Democrat Elad Gross and Libertarian Ryan Munro.
Missouri’s attorney general serves a four-year term, with a maximum of two terms.
Secretary of State
Republican Jay Ashcroft is running for governor so he’s not seeking re-election for Missouri attorney general, a statewide office.
Missouri Sen. Denny Hoskins emerged as the victor in a crowded Republican field. Barbara Phifer was leading on the Democratic side over Haley Jacobson and Monique Williams.
Missouri’s secretary of state serves a four-year term, with a maximum of two terms.
Ballot Measures
Missouri had two statewide issues on ballots for this election.
Voters rejected Amendment 1, which would have allowed the legislature to make child care facilities exempt from paying property taxes.
But Amendment 4 narrowly passed, meaning Kansas City will be required to fund its police with at least 25% of the city’s budget, rather than the current 20% requirement. That comes out to an additional $38.7 million from Kansas City taxpayers. The entire state voted on the issue because KCPD is under state control. This year’s vote was a redo of a 2022 ballot measure overturned by the Missouri Supreme Court this spring.
Missouri House
State representatives are lawmakers responsible for drafting and voting on legislation. They also help create the state budget and create legislation that helps regulate state agencies. There are 163 state representatives in the Missouri House, each serving a two-year term at a time.
Platte County residents voted in the District 12, District 13, District 14 and District 38 primaries.
