In the U.S. Senate race, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt is running against Democrat Trudy Busch Valentine, a philanthropist and heir to the Anheuser-Busch fortune, to succeed retiring Republican Sen. Roy Blunt.

After winning a tightly contested Republican primary by courting the endorsement of former President Donald Trump (the best he got was an endorsement for “Eric”), Schmitt has stayed the course by continuing to focus on Missouri’s growing conservative base rather than move toward the middle like candidates running in tight elections in other states.

Schmitt, who is considered a heavy favorite, has said he’ll “take a blowtorch” to President Joe Biden’s agenda and has continued to use his powers as the state’s attorney general to challenge the Biden administration’s policies in court.

Busch Valentine has loaned more than $16 million of her own money into her effort to win the seat. She’s spent a lot of time highlighting Schmitt’s vote in the Missouri Senate to allow foreign companies to own a larger chunk of Missouri farmland and has pledged to make a bill opposing the foreign ownership of farmland a top priority if she’s elected.
