Pickup driver runs down and kills pedestrian, then aims for witness, Oregon officials say
A man accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian with his pickup truck and then accelerating toward a witness is facing prison time, Oregon prosecutors said.
Frederick Moore, 43, was convicted of first-degree manslaughter and other charges in connection with the “incredibly violent” and “shocking” incident, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said in a March 13 news release.
Moore faces at least 10 years behind bars when he’s sentenced in April, prosecutors said.
McClatchy News reached out to his attorney March 17 and was awaiting a response.
Moore is accused of running down pedestrian Vincent Timothy in June 2022 near a shopping plaza in Portland.
“As Timothy began walking on the sidewalk near (Moore’s) truck, Moore quickly accelerated and struck Timothy, who was dragged under Moore’s GMC Canyon,” prosecutors said.
Another man saw what happened and started yelling at Moore, prosecutors said.
“Moore then accelerated and aimed the truck at (the witness),” who was able to jump out of the truck’s path, according to prosecutors. The man’s bicycle was hit, prosecutors said.
Timothy, 42, died at the scene, according to Portland police.
Prosecutors said they “still don’t have a reason for why this happened,” per the release.
“It was an incredibly violent act — hitting someone with your truck then aiming for a witness who shouted at you is shocking,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Kristen Kyle-Castelli said in the release, adding that the incident “leaves the family with a lot of questions.”
She mentioned Moore’s past, saying he was “already a convicted murderer whose sentence ended in 2018, just four years before this incident,” per the release.
The Oregonian reported that Moore was convicted as a teen in a Washington state killing.
Along with the first-degree manslaughter conviction, the Oregon jury found Moore guilty of attempted murder in the second degree, attempted assault in the first degree, and two counts of failure to perform the duties of a driver, according to prosecutors.
