Driver in fatal wreck found ‘confused’ miles from crash site, Oregon deputies say
A 27-year-old man believed to be the driver in a fatal wreck that killed his passenger was found “confused” a few miles from the crash site, deputies in Oregon said.
The man had called 911 to report that “he was the victim of a hit-and-run crash,” the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a March 1 news release.
Deputies said the man “appeared confused and struggled to answer questions” when they found him with his Toyota Camry at about 2:15 a.m. March 1.
Around the same time the man called 911, the sheriff’s office also got an automatic crash notification from a Toyota. They searched near where the crash notification went off and discovered an unconscious man, deputies said.
“Deputies performed life-saving measures by administering CPR,” but “the man did not survive,” per the release.
“Based on evidence at the scene, it is believed that the man was a passenger in the car driven by (the 27-year-old),” deputies said, adding that the Camry hit a power pole.
The name of the passenger wasn’t released.
The 27-year-old driver “appeared impaired” and a hospital test put his blood alcohol level at .23, almost triple the legal limit, deputies said.
He was arrested on charges of second-degree manslaughter, felony hit and run, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and reckless driving, deputies said.
McClatchy News isn’t naming him pending criminal charges being filed.
Multnomah County includes Portland.
