A 40-year-old man faces at least 25 years in prison after a jury convicted him in connection with “a years-long escalation of violence” against his former partner, Oregon prosecutors said.

The man is accused of physically and sexually assaulting the woman, including one instance in which “he hit her so hard in the face she could not eat for days,” prosecutors said.

After the woman obtained a protective order, the man talked of killing her and tried to get his parents to kill her mother, according to prosecutors.

McClatchy News isn’t naming the man to protect the identity of his ex-partner and their child.

His attorneys couldn’t immediately be reached by McClatchy News on Feb. 25 for comment.

A jury convicted the man of charges including attempted murder in the second degree constituting domestic violence, solicitation of murder, stalking, and rape in the first degree constituting domestic violence, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said in a Feb. 21 news release.

He’s scheduled to be sentenced in March.

In a court document, prosecutors painted a picture of violence starting when the man “tapped” the woman on the head in late 2020 because of a disagreement. She told him “to never hit her again,” and he “became enraged,” shoving or striking her in the chest with his open hand and knocking the wind out of her, prosecutors said.

The document described multiple instances during which the man is accused of forcing the former partner into sex.

After the woman obtained a protective order in 2022, the man “sought assistance from his father” to find her and their child, according to prosecutors.

He directed the father to hire a private investigator and “began making statements” about killing the ex-partner, prosecutors said. “He described a variety of ways in which he would potentially kill her,” prosecutors said, and bought a crossbow because he couldn’t buy a gun.

“(He) talked about how he practiced at length with the crossbow and determined which arrows would go ‘deep into the target,’” according to prosecutors.

The man also talked of torturing and killing the ex-partner’s mother, prosecutors said.

He’s accused of trying to get both of his parents on separate occasions to kill the mother.

The man left Oregon in March 2023 after police tried to contact him about violating the protective order, and he was arrested after an altercation in California but fled while on supervised release, prosecutors said.

Over the course of about a month starting in April 2023, the ex-partner found multiple tracking devices on her vehicle, including one that was linked to the man through his phone number, according to prosecutors.

The man was arrested in Oregon in May 2023, prosecutors said, and police found a loaded Glock-17, additional magazines, a crossbow and arrows in the vehicle he was driving.

Multnomah County includes Portland.
