A woman who officials said was in “a volatile and strained relationship” with her boyfriend has been convicted in connection with his shooting death in Colorado, prosecutors said.

A jury found Ashley White, 29, guilty of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, and robbery more than four years after 28-year-old Cody DeLisa was found shot in the head in Adams County, District Attorney Brian Mason said in a Jan. 28 news release.

White’s “callous actions” led to DeLisa’s death, Mason said in the release.

She’s scheduled to be sentenced in April.

McClatchy News reached out to her attorney Jan. 28 and was awaiting a response.

Prosecutors said DeLisa and White’s relationship became strained in the months before the shooting, with DeLisa’s criticism over White’s trouble finding a full-time job contributing “to tension between the two,” prosecutors said.

White was resentful, “even writing in her diary that she regretted ever meeting DeLisa,” prosecutors said.

“Her frustration escalated after an incident in which she attempted to drown and burn DeLisa’s cat, a behavior that raised alarms about her mental well-being,” according to prosecutors.

In August 2020, White rode the bus home after interviewing for a job in Denver, prosecutors said. She messaged DeLisa about the interview and became upset when he “expressed skepticism about her chances of getting the job,” according to prosecutors.

That’s when a stranger apparently became involved.

During the bus ride, White met a man “who introduced himself as ‘Scott,’” prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, “Scott asked if she was in a relationship with a man and whether he raped her. White responded that he had, and Scott then said they must kill him.”

The pair eventually made their way to White and DeLisa’s home, and Scott told DeLisa he was White’s brother, prosecutors said.

Then, “a short time later, DeLisa was shot twice in the head,” according to prosecutors.

His body was found in a welfare check a day later.

Scott and White took DeLisa’s wallet and “spent the next few days in the area before Scott departed,” prosecutors said.

White “never saw him again” after that, prosecutors said.

She eventually was arrested and charged in DeLisa’s death, according to prosecutors.

Three years after DeLisa’s fatal shooting, a woman stepped forward saying she thought her boyfriend was responsible, prosecutors said.

He wasn’t named Scott, but “her description of (the man’s) confession matched White’s account of the crime,” according to prosecutors.

The man was in custody in connection with a different killing elsewhere in Colorado, and he’s been ruled incompetent for trial in that matter, prosecutors said.

McClatchy News isn’t naming him because he hasn’t been charged in DeLisa’s death.

In the news release, Mason said White “bears significant culpability” for DeLisa’s “tragic and senseless murder.”
