A man crashed his car with his girlfriend’s body inside after fleeing from officers, Nevada police say.

Las Vegas Metropolitan police said they got a call from a person saying their friend had shot his girlfriend just after 8 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, the department said in a Jan. 20 post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

With the friend’s description of the man’s car, police started searching the area.

Officers spotted a blue Ford Mustang that matched the friend’s description and tried to stop the car, but the driver fled, according to police.

Then, “minutes later,” the car crashed into another car at a nearby intersection.

As officers were taking the suspect — later identified as Julio Machado Vasquez — into custody, they spotted a woman inside the car with a gunshot wound, police said.

First responders declared the woman dead on scene, police said.

Machado Vasquez, 24, was taken to a hospital for his injuries, according to police. He was arrested on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon, police said.

An investigation is ongoing.
