A 39-year-old man accused of plowing into his ex-girlfriend and two of her family members with his car was convicted of attempted first-degree murder and other charges after an eight-day trial, prosecutors in Colorado said.

Manuel Handboy is scheduled to be sentenced in April.

McClatchy News couldn’t immediately reach his attorneys Jan. 21 for comment.

Handboy intentionally drove his Acura sedan into his ex-girlfriend, her mother and sister in 2022 outside a motel in Adams County, according to a Jan. 21 news release from Brian Mason, district attorney for Adams and Broomfield counties.

“The force of the impact sent both the victim and her mother into the air, while the victim’s sister, who was sitting in her car, was also struck. The victim and her sister sustained injuries, and their mother was knocked unconscious, suffering a traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures,” prosecutors said.

The three women had been shopping and were unloading items at the motel where the ex-girlfriend was staying after her recent split from Handboy, prosecutors said.

The women spotted Handboy in his black sedan as they unloaded, and then he sped toward them “without warning,” prosecutors said.

He tried to run away “after crashing his vehicle and flipping it onto its side,” but a “courageous” bystander stopped him until deputies arrived, prosecutors said.

A jury on Jan. 13 found him guilty of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, attempted manslaughter, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and third-degree assault, according to prosecutors.

Handboy caused “unspeakable suffering,” Mason said in the news release. “The defendant’s violent actions are an outrageous assault on this community, and I’m grateful to the jury for returning a just verdict.”

Adams County is about a 60-mile drive east from Denver.
