Announcer calls girls’ names ‘disgusting’ while introducing high schoolers in Oklahoma

A school in Oklahoma has apologized after a longtime announcer called the names of players on an opposing high school basketball team “disgusting.”

Newkirk High School was hosting the Crooked Oak Girls basketball team on Friday when the announcer made the comment about the Crooked Oak players’ names, KOCO reported.

Newkirk is roughly 100 miles northwest of Tulsa.

In video of the incident posted to Twitter, players are seen lined up waiting for starters’ names to be called when the announcer says, “Now their names are pretty disgusting, but I’m going to try to call them out.”

Someone in the stands can be heard saying “What did he just say?” as the Crooked Oak players seem visibly confused.

Newkirk superintendent Brady Barnes told the Oklahoman he was shocked by the announcer’s comment and quickly asked him to leave.

“I, myself, was caught off guard when I heard him say that,” Barnes said. “I was like, ‘there’s no way he just said that.’ But he did, and it’s nothing we condone or support.”

Barnes posted a statement to the school system’s Facebook page on Saturday decrying the comments of the announcer.

“To the Newkirk and Crooked Oak communities at large, I would like to say that this unfortunate comment does not represent the Newkirk Public Schools or its beliefs,” the post said. “We sincerely apologize for any pain or affront our announcer’s comment has caused Crooked Oak players, parents, patrons, and school employees.”

Because the announcer is an employee of the school system, Barnes added he wouldn’t comment on what disciplinary actions were taken.

Despite the incident, Crooked Oak won the game — and the district championship, KOCO reported.
