One man is in police custody after a deadly reported shooting outside a shopping center at the intersection of 87th Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard.

Kansas City police received a report of a shooting in the 8700 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard around 12:45 p.m. on Friday. There, an adult male was suffering from an apparent gunshot.

Individuals were providing medical aid to the victim before officers arrived, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a KCPD spokesperson said. Emergency services personnel transported the man to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to a news release from KCPD.

The police said their early investigation of the shooting indicates that an argument between several people took place outside a business in the shopping center. The argument escalated into gunfire and the victim was struck, according to police. The incident was in the parking lot, Gonzalez said.

An adult male who remained at the scene was taken into police custody for questioning. Detectives were on the scene to investigate and take witness statements. The investigation remains ongoing and is being treated as a homicide.

The man who died has not been identified as of Friday afternoon.

The man’s death marks the 64th homicide in Kansas City in 2026, compared to 76 at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
