One dead after argument escalates into gunfire at KC apartment complex
A man is dead after an argument escalated into gunfire at an apartment complex in Kansas City’s Hidden Valley neighborhood Thursday.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to an apartment complex in the 9400 block of Cleveland Avenue at 4:45 p.m. upon reports of a shooting, Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the department, said in a news release Thursday.
There, investigators found a man in the parking lot who had been shot several times, Becchina said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Becchina said preliminary information indicated the man and another person had been arguing in an apartment. The pair moved to the parking lot, where several others became involved.
The argument escalated into gunfire, which struck the man, Becchina said.
The man’s death marks the 63rd homicide in Kansas City in 2026, compared to 75 at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
As of Thursday evening, detectives were still canvassing the area and speaking with people at the scene, Becchina said.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
