Uber driver heading to World Cup was victim in Kansas City highway shootings: Police
An Uber driver taking passengers to a World Cup match at Kansas City Stadium was among five victims of a string of highway shootings Tuesday, police confirmed.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said in a press conference Wednesday night that police had not identified any other ties to the World Cup.
“I will say that our officers drove the fans to the match, and they got there on time,” Graves said.
The identity of the Uber driver was not publicized.
Police say four people were wounded in separate incidents at Interstate 670 and Wyoming Street, Interstate 70 and Paseo Boulevard, I-70 and Prospect Avenue, and at Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue. Another man, who died after his vehicle crashed at Truman Road and Bennington Avenue, is also thought to have been shot by the same suspect.
The shootings took place about eight miles from Kansas City Stadium, which is hosting six World Cup matches this year, as fans were heading to the Kansas City’s first match of the World Cup.
Police have identified Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, 22, as the suspect in all of the shootings. Two separate standoffs were conducted by police at homes they believed Sanchez-Munoz went to after the shootings.
The first standoff was overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning at an Independence home in the 700 block of Brookside Avenue, which police believe to be Sanchez-Munoz’ primary residence. That standoff ended with the house catching fire, and Sanchez-Munoz nowhere to be found.
A second standoff took place at a home near 16th Street and Kensington Avenue after detectives got information Sanchez-Munoz may have been there. Officers entered the home and did not find him there, police said.
Anyone who sees Sanchez-Munoz is asked to call 911 immediately, Becchina said. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
