House catches fire during police standoff with Kansas City shooting suspect
A house caught fire in Independence on Wednesday during a police standoff with a person police think was involved in a series of shootings that left one person dead in Kansas City.
Detectives identified one suspect they believe was involved in five shootings across Kansas City on Tuesday, before he was located at an Independence home, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. A police presence remained around the home in the 700 block of South Brookside Avenue on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the Independence Police Department said the home caught fire around midnight, prompting the Independence Fire Department to respond.
Four people were wounded in the shootings at Interstate 670 and Wyoming Street, Interstate 70 and Paseo Boulevard, I-70 and Prospect Avenue, and at Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue. Another man, who died after his vehicle crashed at Truman Road and Bennington Avenue, is also thought to have been shot by the same suspect, Becchina confirmed Wednesday.
Police said three of the victims are adults and one is a teen. On Wednesday, police said the teen was in stable condition, and two of the three adults had injuries police not thought to be life-threatening. One adult had life-threatening injuries, Becchina said.
Standoff still ‘active’
Police cars from both Kansas City and Independence surrounded the home Wednesday. Officers were flying a drone, and a U.S. Marshal was seen walking the scene.
Independence police shared a “public safety alert” on the department’s Facebook page Tuesday night, directing residents to avoid the area of U.S. 24 Highway and Brookside Avenue.
Five dogs were found dead at the scene during the standoff, potentially from “smoke inhalation,” according to Allyx McCoy, a spokeswoman for Independence police.
Independence police had not identified or detained a suspect as of Wednesday morning, McCoy said. She declined to comment on whether the suspect is still alive.
Neighbors, however, think the perpetrator of the standoff — and potentially the shootings — likely did not survive the night.
“I’m sorry to say that I really think he’s deceased,” said Kellee Wallace, who lives near Brookside Avenue. “They keep saying, ‘There was a standoff, a standoff.’ I don’t think nothing would have survived that fire.”
Witness describes tense standoff
Wallace said that she believes Kansas City police were already following the suspect when he came to Brookside Avenue and barricaded himself in the home, as she watched from inside her residence. Officers instructed neighbors to return to their houses and lock their doors, she said.
“He came, he was in front of my house, and he shot at the house next door,” Wallace said. “Then he went up there and barricaded himself. … They’ve been out here all night long.”
A police presence formed in the area early Tuesday afternoon and continued long into the night, Wallace said.
“I woke up to smelling smoke in the grass,” Wallace said. “We heard a boom, and you could just see smoke and the glow from the flames … the firefighters did a real good job of keeping it contained.”
McCoy said the KCPD is taking over the investigation because they believe the suspect is linked to a series of shootings in the city.
McCoy also denied reports that the suspect may have taken someone hostage during the standoff.
“As far as I know, no hostages,” McCoy said.
The city of Independence declined to comment on the standoff and shootings, directing media outreach back to the Independence Police Department.
