Police continue the search for a man wanted in connection with a string of shootings after an overnight standoff at a Kansas City home turned up empty.

Detectives got information that led them to search a home near 16th Street and Kensington Avenue, where an Operation 100, a police tactical response to a standoff scene, began Wednesday night. The standoff lasted through the overnight hours and ended after officers entered the home and did not find the suspect, Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, inside.

Investigators are processing the scene and gathering evidence after the standoff ended Thursday morning, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. It’s unclear whether the suspect was there during the standoff.

Sanchez-Munoz, 22, was identified by police Wednesday as the man they believe shot five people across Kansas City on Tuesday evening, killing one man. A man hunt has been ongoing since the shootings.

Four wounded, one killed in shootings

Police say four people were wounded in separate incidents at Interstate 670 and Wyoming Street, Interstate 70 and Paseo Boulevard, I-70 and Prospect Avenue, and at Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue.

Another man, who died after his vehicle crashed at Truman Road and Bennington Avenue, is also thought to have been shot by the same suspect, Becchina confirmed Wednesday.

Three of the shooting victims are adults and one is a juvenile teen, Becchina said. As of Wednesday, the teen was in stable condition, and two of the three adults had injuries police believed to be not life-threatening. One adult suffered life-threatening injuries, Becchina said.

Sanchez-Munoz already had an active warrant for his arrest issued in Wyandotte County for a previous aggravated assault charge, carrying a $100,000 bond, before Tuesday’s shootings.

In a press conference Wednesday, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said law enforcement considers Sanchez-Munoz armed and dangerous.

Standoff in Independence

Becchina said Sanchez-Munoz was first located after the shootings at an Independence home Tuesday night, where police also initiated a standoff. The home eventually caught fire, prompting a response from the Independence Fire Department.

Witnesses who live in the neighborhood described the chaotic events leading up to the standoff, including being locked inside or out of their homes as the operation was underway.

The Independence home in the 700 block of South Brookside Avenue is thought to be Sanchez-Munoz’ primary residence. Officers reported that he had barricaded himself inside.

Police said the house caught fire around midnight Wednesday. Investigators said they did not know whether Sanchez-Munoz set the fire intentionally.

After searching the house in Independence, police did not find Sanchez-Munoz. Graves said authorities were unsure how he may have been able to get out of the house.

Anyone who sees Sanchez-Munoz is asked to call 911 immediately, Becchina said. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
