String of highway shootings in KC leads to standoff with suspect at Independence home
Multiple shootings on Kansas City area highways Tuesday were linked to one suspect, eventually leading to a standoff overnight in Independence, police said.
Officers were notified of four shooting victims who were driving down the highway between 6 and 6:30 p.m. when one or more shots were fired into their vehicles.
A spokesman for the police department said the vehicles were reportedly shot at Interstate 670 and Wyoming Street, Interstate 70 and Paseo Boulevard, I-70 and Prospect Avenue, and at Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue.
Four people were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. Three of the victims are adults and one is a juvenile teen, Becchina said. As of early Wednesday morning, the teen was in stable condition, and two of the three adults had injuries police believed to be not life-threatening.
One adult suffered life-threatening injuries, Becchina said.
Detectives were searching for the exact location of the shootings Tuesday. Early on in the investigation, police said they believe the four shootings happened in close succession of one another, geographically from the west to the east.
One person has been identified as a suspect in all the shootings, Becchina said.
The suspect was also tied to a fatal car crash reported around 6:30 p.m. at Truman Road and Bennington. As medical staff treated a man injured in the crash, they discovered a gunshot wound. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police have not yet publicly identified the man who died.
String of shootings leads to standoff
Becchina said in an email Wednesday that a suspect was located a short time after the shootings in a house in Independence.
The Independence Police Department began a standoff with the suspect, trying to get them out of the house Tuesday and it lasted into the overnight hours, Becchina said.
No further information has been made available about what happened during the standoff.
A spokesperson for the Independence Police Department has not yet responded to requests for comment on the incident.
It is unclear whether the suspect has been taken into custody.
