Woman found fatally stabbed in KC Northland driveway; relative in custody

One woman is dead, and another one is in custody after a stabbing during a disturbance early Thursday in Kansas City’s Northland, a police spokesperson said.

Officers responded just before 12:15 a.m. to a reported disturbance in the 4900 block of North Topping Avenue in the Maple Park West neighborhood, Officer Alayna Gonzalez of the Kansas City Police Department said.

Arriving officers found a woman outside a home who matched the description of a possible suspect and took her into custody for questioning, Gonzalez said.

While investigating, officers were directed to a nearby home in the 5700 block of Northeast 49th Street. There, they found an unresponsive woman in the driveway suffering from stab wounds. Emergency medical services pronounced her dead at the scene, Gonzalez said.

A preliminary investigation found the victim and suspect are related and had been involved in an ongoing argument. Detectives were not seeking additional suspects, Gonzalez said.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the area to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

The killing is Kansas City’s 53rd homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares with 69 by this time last year.
