‘Perceived dispute’ leads to 20-minute shootout in KCK. Neighbor seriously injured
A Kansas City, Kansas, resident received serious injuries after a 20-minute shootout between a neighbor and police, officials say.
About 9:35 p.m. Sunday, multiple callers at the 3400 block of N. 40th called the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department saying their homes were under gunfire, wrote Nancy Chartrand, police spokesperson, in a news release.
When police arrived at the block in the Quindaro area of Wyandotte County, they allegedly found an “individual was actively discharging a firearm from inside a residence.”
For more than 20 minutes, the suspect and multiple officers shot back and forth, according to a Kansas Bureau of Investigations news release.
The suspect left the house uninjured and was arrested without incident, according to Chartrand and the KBI.
A resident was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after the suspect’s bullet struck them, officials say. Another person received minor injuries while trying to get cover, and was also transported to the hospital, according to the release.
No officers were injured, though a bullet hit a patrol vehicle, Chartrand wrote.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting may have been triggered by a perceived dispute with a neighbor,” Chartrand wrote.
The KBI and the KCKPD Major Case Unit are investigating the incident. The state-level agency aims to “discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting.”
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
