Man dies after being stabbed overnight in Kansas City’s Gillham Park

A man died after he was stabbed during an altercation early Wednesday in Kansas City’s Gillham Park, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday to a reported slashing at East 41st Street and Gillham Road in the South Hyde Park neighborhood, said Capt. Jake Becchina of the Kansas City Police Department.

Arriving officers found an unresponsive man who had significant injuries consistent with being stabbed, Becchina said. Officers rendered aid until an emergency medical crew arrived. The medical crew took the man to a hospital, where the victim was declared dead.

Officers also detained a person for further investigation. A preliminary investigation found that the two were in the park when they got into an altercation when the victim was stabbed.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene to collect evidence.

The killing is Kansas City’s 45th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 54 homicides by this time last year.
