Afternoon shootout on Kansas City’s West Side injures one, police say
Volleys of gunfire interrupted a peaceful Sunday afternoon on Kansas City’s West Side, witnesses say.
A midday shooting on near Tony Aguirre Community Center injured one person, according to Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Phil DiMartino.
“The injuries are serious but the victim is considered stable,” DiMartino wrote in an email.
Sarah Tepikian was driving home to the River Market when shots rang out nearby.
“I saw people running, and I heard gunshots,” she said.
In the commotion, Tepikian said another car hit her SUV at the intersection of West Pennway, West 21st and Summit streets. Standing by her totalled vehicle, which had its airbags out and side crumpled, Tepikian struggled to remember specifics of the crash.
“You’re trying to avoid gunshots, and it’s a little blurry,” she said.
“I wish that we would stop shooting people in the middle of the day,” Tepikian said.
Residents near the Tony Aguirre Community Center heard shots ring out.
Salvador Magana was seeding his front lawn on Summit Street when he saw people shooting back and forth on West Pennway.
He said he heard “at least 20” shots.
Magana’s wife, who was inside at the time, said the exchange sounded like a gangster movie.
