One dead after suspected homicide near Kansas City’s Swope Park
A man is dead after he was found with gunshot wounds early Monday morning near Kansas City’s Swope Park, police say.
At 1:15 a.m., the Kansas City Police Department received calls about gunshots fired near East 63rd Street and Manchester Avenue, according to a press release from Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesperson. This intersection is near the convergence of I-435 and Blue Parkway, close to Raytown.
While on their way, officers received information about a crash approximately a mile west of the reported gunshots, at East 63rd Street and Beacon Drive, DiMartino wrote in the release.
There, a car had gone off the road and a man inside appeared to have been shot, police said.
Kansas City Fire Department medics pronounced the man dead on the scene, according to the release.
KCPD is investigating the incident as a homicide, police officials said.
No one is in custody, DiMartino said. Police are looking for witnesses and surveillance footage to find out what led to the gun shots, according to the release.
The killing is the city’s 40th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 53 homicides reported by this time last year.
