Officer shot trying to arrest KC homicide suspect in Ottawa. Suspect found dead
An Ottawa Police Department officer was shot during an operation to apprehend a homicide suspect Friday, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Officers from the Ottawa Police Department and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded around 5:30 p.m. to a residence in the 500 block of South Locust Street in Ottawa. The departments’ Special Tactics and Rescue Team were trying to apprehend a suspect from a Kansas City, Missouri, homicide, the KBI said in a news release.
As officers approached the home, the suspect fired shots from within the residence, striking an Ottawa police officer outside. The officer sustained serious injuries, but they’re not believed to be life-threatening, the KBI said.
Paramedics responded and transported the officer to a Kansas City hospital. The officer is receiving treatment and is expected to recover, the KBI said.
Officers did not return fire during the encounter with the suspect. Instead, they contained the area and proceeded into a barricaded subject operation, investigators said.
Tactical teams from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to assist the Ottawa officers.
Those tactical teams eventually entered the residence around 9:40 p.m., about four hours after the officer was shot. Inside, they found the suspect with an apparent gunshot wound, the KBI said.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesman for the KBI said in an email Saturday that while the investigation is ongoing, he could not release further details about how the suspect ended up shot.
Shootings involving officers in Kansas are often investigated by the KBI at the request of local agencies.
The agency said in a news release that it releases information to the public as soon as possible in police use of force cases.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
