Woman killed, man injured in backyard shooting on Kansas City’s East Side

Gunfire in a backyard after an altercation killed a woman and injured a man early Thursday on Kansas City’s East Side, police said.

Officers responded shortly after 12:45 a.m. to the shooting in the 400 block of Wallace Avenue in Kansas City’s North Blue Ridge neighborhood, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.

Arriving officers were directed to the backyard of a home, where they found a woman with a gunshot wound, DiMartino said. Officers began life-saving measures and requested an ambulance to respond to the scene.

An emergency medical crew pronounced the woman dead at the scene. Her death is being investigated as a homicide. Meanwhile, a man was driven to a hospital, where he was being treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, DiMartino said.

A preliminary investigation found that shots were fired after an altercation involving multiple people, and the victims were struck, DiMartino said.

Detectives and crime scene investigators canvassed the area for witnesses, surveillance video, and evidence.

The killing is Kansas City’s 30th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. That compares to 42 homicides reported by this time last year.

Detectives urged anyone with information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Tips submitted anonymously to the hotline may be eligible for a reward of up to $25,000.

Tipsters may also call homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043.
