Two killed in apparent murder-suicide at Independence apartment

Two people died in an apparent murder-suicide Tuesday evening at the Independence Ridge Apartments in Independence, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded about 6:20 p.m. to investigate a reported shooting at an apartment in the 19100 block of East 37th Terrace, said Officer Bryan Conley with the Independence Police Department.

When they arrived, officers found a woman and a man dead from gunshot wounds inside the apartment, Conley said.

The Independence Police Department’s criminal investigation unit determined the shooting was a murder-suicide, Conley said in an update Wednesday morning. The identity of those killed were not being released at this time.

Further details, the circumstances that led up to the shooting, were not released. The case remains under investigation, Conley said.

The homicide is the city’s first of the year. That compares to four homicides at this point last year.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
