Kansas City man accused of shooting tow truck driver during argument
A Kansas City man is facing an assault charge after he allegedly shot a tow truck driver during an argument, according to court documents.
The Platte County Prosecutor’s Office charged Ezekial Z. Doss, 33, with one count of second-degree assault in the shooting early Saturday in the 6400 block of Northwest 70th Street in Kansas City, North.
According to court documents, Kansas City police were called about 2:10 a.m. Saturday to investigate a report of a shooting. While en route, dispatch told officers that a man allegedly shot a tow truck driver and kicked him in the head.
Platte County Sheriff’s deputies found the driver shot in the cab and arrested Doss nearby after he tried to hide a 9mm handgun by a trash bin, court records said. Doss allegedly told them, “That’s not my gun.”
The victim was taken to a hospital for emergency surgery. Kansas City police recovered the handgun and a casing at the scene.
A witness and Doss’ fiancée told detectives that Doss and the driver had argued before the shooting. Detectives say that surveillance video shows Doss digging in his shorts pockets and later pulling a handgun before deputies arrived.
When detectives questioned Doss, he said he needed a tow after a tire on his Dodge Charger collapsed on northbound Interstate 635 near State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.
Doss told detectives that the driver became combative during the tow. He said the driver attacked him when they arrived at his home, and the gun fired during the struggle, though he gave differing accounts of whether it fired from his pocket or after he pulled it out.
Doss told detectives he did not want the gun in his hands when police arrived, so he dropped it on the ground by the dumpster.
Doss appeared in Platte County Circuit Court on Monday, where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. He is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond.
