Woman in her mid-60s dies after fifth-floor Kansas City apartment fire

A woman died after firefighters rescued her through a window during a fifth-floor apartment fire early Monday in Kansas City’s Linwood Homeowners–Ivanhoe neighborhood, officials said.

Kansas City firefighters responded to a medical alarm shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday at the Mid-City Towers II in the 3100 block of Flora Avenue, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.

As they arrived, the fire department received a commercial fire alarm coming from the fifth floor of the apartment building, Hopkins said.

While one fire company handled the medical call, a second company went to the fifth floor to investigate the alarm. When the firefighters reached the fifth floor, they found smoke and fire in an apartment and requested that the alarm be upgraded to a working apartment fire, Hopkins said.

Firefighters searched the apartment and found a woman in her mid-60s unconscious in the bathroom of the apartment. Firefighters secured the victim and removed her from the building through the window of an adjoining fifth-floor apartment, Hopkins said.

Firefighters performed lifesaving measures on the critically injured woman as they took her to a hospital. The woman, however, was pronounced dead early Monday at the hospital, Hopkins said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and contained it to the single apartment. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
