Man killed after encounter with multiple people escalates into gunfire in KC

Update: Police on Tuesday identified the victim as 19-year-old Alexander Richardson, a police spokesperson said.

A man is dead after shots were fired during an encounter with several other people Sunday evening in Kansas City’s North Town Fork Creek neighborhood, a police spokesperson said.

Police received numerous calls regarding a shooting about 7:30 p.m. on Easter in the 5700 block of Askew Avenue, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez of the Kansas City Police Department.

Arriving officers found an unresponsive man with apparent gunshot wounds lying in the street near East 58th Street and Askew, Gonzalez said.

Officers checked for a pulse and attempted to render medical aid. Emergency medical workers arrived shortly after and pronounced the victim dead, Gonzalez said.

Police on Tuesday identified the victim as 19-year-old Alexander Richardson.

A preliminary investigation found that the victim had an unspecified interaction with multiple people, described by police as males, that escalated into gunfire, Gonzalez said. After the shooting, the others fled in an unknown direction before officers arrived.

Police have not identified any persons of interest and no one was in custody, Gonzalez said. The killing is being investigated as a homicide.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the scene and gathered evidence and witness statements.

The killing is Kansas City’s 29th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. That compares to 42 homicides reported by this time last year.

Detectives urged anyone with information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Tips submitted anonymously to the hotline may be eligible for a reward of up to $25,000. Tipsters may also call homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043.
