One man shot to death at Midtown KC apartment building, police say
Update: Police identified the man who died as Jose M. Poole, 34.
Police are investigating a homicide after one man died in a shooting outside an apartment building in Midtown Kansas City Saturday.
Officers responded around 2 a.m. to the 3900 block of Baltimore Ave for a call about the sound of gunfire. While en route, the call was updated and police were notified someone had been shot, said Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman.
Upon the officers’ arrival, people at the scene led them to the back parking lot of some apartment buildings. There, they found a man unresponsive suffering from gunshot wounds, Becchina said.
Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Becchina said a preliminary investigation indicates the man was fatally shot after he had an interaction with people that escalated to gunfire.
Investigators are looking for witnesses and searching for evidence at the shooting scene.
No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case as of Saturday afternoon.
The killing is Kansas City’s 23rd homicide of 2026, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 26 homicides.
