Fatal shooting at apartment in Kansas City’s Lykins neighborhood leaves one dead

A man is dead after a fatal shooting Thursday at an apartment building in Kansas City’s Lykins neighborhood.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to an apartment building in the 1200 block of Askew Avenue just after 4:30 p.m. after receiving a call regarding a shooting, Capt. Jake Becchina, media unit commander for the department, said in a news release.

Inside the building, officers found a man who had been shot, Becchina said. He was declared dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation found that someone had called 911 after walking into the apartment and finding the victim unresponsive, Becchina said.

Detectives were still canvassing the area for witnesses Thursday evening, Becchina said. No suspects are in custody.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call detectives at 816-234-5043, or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Tips submitted to the hotline may qualify for a reward of up to $25,000.
