Man killed, person released from custody after Blue Springs shooting

One man is dead, and another person has been released from custody pending further investigation following a shooting over the weekend at an apartment complex in Blue Springs, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded to the shooting around 8 p.m. Saturday after receiving a call from a person who said they had shot their sister’s boyfriend at the Lodge Apartments in the 1100 block of Arlington Place.

Arriving officers found 38-year-old Randy Meredith dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds, police said.

Police took a 20-year-old Blue Springs resident into custody, but that person has since been released pending further investigation, said Capt. Kyle Flowers with the Blue Springs Police Department.

No charges have been filed, and police are continuing the investigation before presenting the case file to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, Flowers said.

The killing is Blue Spring’s first homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star.
