Man dies after shooting at downtown KC apartments; police search for answers

A man is dead after a shooting early Tuesday at an apartment building in downtown Kansas City, a police spokesman said.

Police dispatchers sent officers just after 12:15 a.m. to the 900 block of Jefferson Street in the Quality Hill neighborhood after receiving a report of gunfire, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.

As officers headed to the scene, police received information that someone had been shot.

There, officers found the victim just inside an apartment building, suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers began lifesaving measures, but the man did not survive. Emergency medical workers pronounced him dead at the scene, DiMartino said.

Detectives were working to determine what led up to the deadly shooting, which is being investigated as a homicide. Crime scene investigators collected evidence and canvassed the area for witnesses and any available surveillance video.

The killing is Kansas City’s 124th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That’s down slightly from 126 homicides reported at this time last year.

Detectives urged anyone with information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Tips submitted anonymously to the hotline may be eligible for a reward of up to $25,000. Tipsters may also call homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043.
