Man dies after being found wounded in Kansas City; police searching for answers
A man died after he was found wounded in a grassy area near an intersection on Kansas City’s East Side early Monday, a police spokeswoman said.
At about 1:45 a.m., dispatchers sent officers to to investigated a reported shooting in the 1600 block of Drury Avenue in the city’s West Blue Valley neighborhood, said Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.
People in the area flagged down officers, saying someone had been shot. Officers found a man later identified as 39-year-old Brandon Stone, unresponsive and suffering from some type of trauma, Gonzalez said. They began rending medical aid, but emergency medical crews who arrived pronounced him dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded, collecting evidence and statements from witnesses. Detectives are working to determine what led up to the killing, which is being investigated as a homicide.
Police have not identified a suspect and no arrests have been made.
The killing is Kansas City’s 121st homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That’s up from 119 homicides reported at this time last year.
