Double shooting kills one, injures another in Kansas City; no motive given
A double shooting involving two groups of people left one man dead and another injured late Saturday in Kansas City’s Sheffield neighborhood, a police spokeswoman said. Police said it is unclear how many people were involved in the incident.
At about 11:15 p.m., dispatchers sent officers to investigate a report of gunfire in the area of 5200 block of Winner Road, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.
While checking the area, security staff told officers there had been a shooting and pointed them to the crime scene, Gonzalez said. Dispatchers then told officers that a man had shown up at a hospital with gunshot wounds, and hospital staff had pronounced him dead. Meanwhile, the other victim showed up at another hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene and collected evidence along with statements from any witnesses. Gonzalez said the man’s death is being investigated as a homicide.
A preliminary investigation revealed that two groups interacted, which escalated to shots being fired, Gonzalez said. Police did not know how many people had been involved, nor did they specify what occurred before the shooting.
No arrests have been announced, and police have not identified a suspect or suspects, Gonzalez said.
The killing is Kansas City’s 120th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That’s up from 119 homicides reported by this time last year.
Detectives urged anyone with any information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Information submitted anonymously to the hotline can earn a reward of up to $25,000.
