Kansas City grocery store says employee was a victim in fatal double shooting
A Kansas City grocery store on Sunday said one of its employees was a victim in a fatal double shooting hours earlier in the store’s parking lot.
Police were called just after 7 a.m. to the El Mercado Fresco at 6859 Longview Road, where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was declared dead at the scene, according to Sgt. Philip DiMartino, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
Another man was also found in the parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital and died just before 9 a.m.
El Mercado Fresco announced Sunday afternoon that one of the victims was an employee, adding the store was closed all Sunday.
“We appreciate your patience and compassion as we navigate this difficult time. The store will reopen tomorrow. We look forward to serving you,” the store said in a post.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday, but preliminary information suggested there was an interaction outside of the grocery store between multiple people just before shots were fired, police said.
The shooting marked the city’s 115th and 116th homicides this year, compared to 116 this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes police shootings.
