A juvenile boy died Tuesday following an afternoon shooting in Kansas City.

Kansas City police officers were dispatched to St. Luke’s Hospital around 2:30 p.m. on reports of a shooting victim, according to a press release from department spokesperson Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

Officers were advised a juvenile boy under the age of 16 arrived at the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, Gonzalez said. After medical staff performed life-saving measures, he was declared dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed the boy was walking outside near East 88th Place and James A Reed Road when “he heard several sounds of shots and was struck by gunfire,” Gonzalez said.

The boy called a friend for help, who picked him up and transported him to the hospital, Gonzalez said.

The death marks the 109th homicide in Kansas City in 2025, compared to 108 at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star; which includes police-involved shootings.

The Kansas City Police Department is investigating the incident. At the time of publication, it is unclear if the shooting was targeted toward the boy.
