Woman dies following fatal shooting in Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood

Update: The Kansas City Police Department identified the victim as 42-year-old Braisen Cain.

A woman died after a shooting in Kansas City’s Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood, according to a news release from Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Jake Becchina.

Officers were dispatched to the 4000 block of Morrell Avenue around 7:50 p.m. on reports of a shooting, Becchina said.

There, they found a woman unresponsive in front of a residence, Becchina said. Officers called emergency responders, who declared the woman dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation found that the woman had been in front of a residence when she got into an altercation with another person or people, Becchina said. The argument escalated and shots were fired, striking the woman.

It’s unclear how many suspects were involved in the incident, Becchina said. Detectives are working to find potential witnesses.

The shooting marks the city’s 101st homicide in 2025, compared to 93 at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star; the total includes fatal police shootings.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043, or the TIPS hotline at 816-575-TIPS. Tips submitted through the TIPS hotline remain anonymous, and may qualify for a reward of up to $25,000.
