Teen dies after spending days in KC hospital with gunshot wound: Police

Kansas City Police are investigating a homicide after a teenager arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound and died days later.

Officers were notified of a man who had arrived in a private vehicle to a Kansas City hospital around 11:57 p.m. Sunday with a life-threatening gunshot wound.

Medical staff notified officers the man had died shortly before 8:30 a.m. Friday, officer Alayna Gonzalez, a police spokesperson, said in a news release.

Police identified the man as 17-year-old William R. Watson.

After a preliminary investigation, detectives believe the shooting may have happened near 69th Street and Bellefontaine Avenue, according to the news release.

Investigators are trying to determine what led up to the shooting.

As of Saturday afternoon, police had not yet identified a suspect. No one was in custody Saturday.

The killing is Kansas City’s 96th homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 87 homicides.
